Abstract

PAEZ, Juan Recchia. The War of Canudos in Brazilian magazines published in Europe: the case of the Revue du Brésil (Paris, 1896-1898)A guerra de Canudos em revistas brasileiras publicadas na Europa: o caso da Revue du Brésil (Paris, 1896-1898). Humanidades (Montevideo. En línea) [online]. 2021, n.9, pp.93-122.  Epub June 01, 2021. ISSN 1510-5024.  https://doi.org/10.25185/9.5.

The War of Canudos took place at the end of the 19th century, when the insertion of the young Brazilian Republic in the world economic market coincided with the expansion of the periodical press. The war, as a discursive event, acquired great relevance thanks to the technological advances that contributed to globalizing the press. In this context, international publications such as the Revue du Brésil (Paris, 1896-1898) and the Revista Moderna (Paris, 1897) were created. These magazines operated as mediators of Brazilian symbolic and cultural products in Paris. This paper analyzes the Revue du Brésil and maintains that Canudos, as a significant number of critics have already analyzed, did concern the Republic of Brazil. The international rewritings of the event shaped the conformation of the republican regime. Therefore, on a world scale, war can be rethought as a conflict governed by written mediations.
