BUSQUETS, José Miguel  e  DELBONO, Andrea. The civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973-1985): an approach to its periodization and characterization in the light of some theorizing on authoritarianism. Rev. Fac. Der. [online]. 2016, n.41, pp.61-102. ISSN 0797-8316.  https://doi.org/10.22187/rfd201624.

The aim of this paper is to present a periodization and characterization of the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973-1985), combining history and theory. The approach intended in this paper is neither historical nor theoretical specifically, but stands in the middle ground of both perspectives. Having set the objectives, undemocratic political regimes is conceptualized in the first place, the concept of dictatorship is then analyzed. In addition, the so-called "new authoritarianism" in Latin America is discussed. Secondly, the analytical framework proposed by Chilean Social Scientist Manuel A. Garretón (1983, 1984) is used to study the authoritarian regimes in the Southern Cone. Then, under such scheme, a chronology of the dictatorship in Uruguay is traced, in dialogue with other periodizations raised by the academy. Finally, based on the theoretical concepts outlined first, and with the contributions of authors who have studied the topic, a reflection on the characteristics of the Uruguayan dictatorship is made.

Palavras-chave : civil-military dictatorship; modern dictatorship; new authoritarianism; Uruguay; Latin America.
