In 1513 is published the first treatise of agriculture in a Romance language, the Gabriel Alonso de Herrera’s Libro de agricultura, which personifies the transition from traditional to modern agriculture.

Despite its importance, it is a hardly studied text, especially in relation to its lexical characteristics. For this reason, in this article it is carried out a lexicological and syntactic analysis of some verbs about vegetable gardens and capable of working both transitively and intransitively. In this way, we analyse their respective lexical occurrences in the fourth book of Herrera’s treatise, devoted to vegetable gardens and their plants, in addition to the information -from different kind- provided by Spanish dictionaries. The results show the superiority of the alternating pronominal class, the low level of specialization of the studied vocabulary and the semantic proximity between some verbs.
