THE SUBSTRATE HYPOTHESISIN THE CONTEXT OFTHE SOCIOLINGUISTICHISTORY OFPOPULAR BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE. Lingüística [online]. 2014, vol.30, n.2, pp.209-240. ISSN 2079-312X.

The article discusses the transferency of structures of indigenous and African languages to the grammar of popular varieties of Brazilian Portuguese during its formation. The substrate hypothesis takes place on the linguistic research in Brazil since contact between languages began to be considered a major factor in the linguistic history of the country, strengthening the parallels between the origin of popular Brazilian Portuguese and creole languages. The paper presents one important substratist formulation in creole linguistics, based on the concept of relexification, and it analyses its possible application to the study of the sociolinguistic history of Brazil, considering its appropriateness, weaknesses and potential, within the view adopted here that, during their formation, the popular varieties of Brazilian Portuguese underwent a process of irregular linguistic transmission of a light type.

Palavras-chave : substrate; Popular Brazilian Portuguese; sociolinguistic history of Brazil; language contact.
