ZEPEDA MAJMUD, Rocío. Constituent processes in Chile: analysis of the registration mechanism and its influence on the election of Constituents. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.2, pp.191-205.  Epub 01-Dez-2023. ISSN 0797-9789.  https://doi.org/10.26851/rucp.32.2.8.

The constituent processes in Chile, after October 2019, were seen as an institutional way out of the political and social crisis. The first process was characterized by the election of a Constitutional Convention, was mostly made up of independents and left-wing party representatives. On that occasion, the constitutional project was rejected by the citizens, so a second process was initiated, where the extreme right won a majority of the available seats. This was interpreted as a victory for the most conservative groups. However, this article argues that this change, more than responding to ideological reasons, was mainly due to the change in the registration modality, where compulsory voting presented an unknown mass of voters capable of changing the course of an election, making electoral results unpredictable and changed the behavior of the actors.

Palavras-chave : Constitutional processes; voluntary and compulsory voting.
