SUMMARY Ultrasonography represents a significant and interesting progress in modern anesthesia practice, allowing visualization of the structures (heart, nerves and blood vessels), improving quality and safety procedures. Because of this, there is great interest among anesthesiologists to learn and develop such technology in their workplaces. Thus, a fundamental issue of ultrasound is to be trained to recognize structures and requires anesthesiologists’ knowledge of ultrasound levels and images. Participating in practical and theoretical workshops is an instructive and engaging way of learning basic principles. For this reason the organizing committee of the 17th Uruguayan Anesthesia Congress included in its program a theoretical and practical workshop on ultrasound. Since the subject is a lengthy one, two topics were selected: transthoracic echocardiography and ultrasound-guided vascular access. Registration was limited to 20 participants, and objectives were successfully accomplished.
