RANDO, Karina et al. Evaluación de la calidad y la satisfacción de la recuperación posanestésica de los pacientes operados en el Hospital de Clínicas. Anest Analg Reanim [online]. 2003, vol.18, n.2, pp.11-19. ISSN 1688-1273.

Evaluation of quality of medical care in terms of results (morbidity and mortality) does not take in account patient subjective experience. In this study we evaluate the subjective aspect of recovery after anaesthesia with a visual analogue scale of satisfaction (VAE) and a quality of recovery questionnaire. 166 patients underwent elective surgery were interviewed 24 hours after leaving postanaesthesic care unit (PACU). Each question was punctuated with a numeric value and a global recovery score (QoR39) was created. The questions were grouped in five different aspects of recovery: comfort, emotional state, physical independence, psychological support and pain. The medium value of QoR39 score was 175,33 ± 11,3 (89,9% of the maximum value). Psychological support and pain were the items with higher punctuation where physical independence and comfort were the lowers. Emotional status had intermediate values. Medium values of QoR39 were statistically different in relation to different anesthesias, complications in PACU and when different physical status (ASA 3) were compared. The medium value of satisfaction (EVA scale) was 7,45 ± 1,87 points from a total of 10. 30% of the patients said that their satisfaction was less than 7 points; 38% between 7 and 8,5 points and another 30% said y it was 9 points and more. We identify a linear relationship between VAE values and QoR39 values (r= 0,73 and p < 0,007). Patient experience was evaluated with a satisfaction scale (VAE) and a quality questionnaire (QoR39) which is a quantitative measure of quality of recover and is a useful tool for a systematic evaluation of the medical assistance process. It is also a useful tool to identify those aspects that are more affected by surgery and anesthesia in our hospital population.
