ZEBALLOS, Jimena; CERISOLA, Alfredo  e  PEREZ, Walter. Primera convulsión febril en niños asistidos en un servicio de emergencia pediátrica . Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2013, vol.84, n.1, pp.18-25. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary    Introduction: febrile seizures (FS) are a common reason for consultation in the emergency services. Despite the benign character of FS, often these children are hospitalized, diagnostic workups are performed, and consultations with specialists may be encouraged. Objective: to describe the clinical features, paraclinical studies and the evolution of patients who were admitted to the British Hospital Emergency Department from 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2008 with a first FS. Material and methods: a descriptive historical cohort study based on the review of the medical records was performed. Clinical features of patients on admission and on recurrence of the seizures in the same or another febrile episode, long-term treatment with antiepileptic drugs and occurrence of afebrile seizures subsequent to the first FS were assessed. Results: we included 113 children, mean age 23 months. The etiology of fever was an upper respiratory infection in 84% of the cases. Infectious work-up took place in 78% of the children, metabolic evaluation in 8% and lumbar puncture in 15%. Seizures recurred in 25% of patients. An electroencephalogram was performed in 53% of the patients, neuroimaging studies in 4 patients and consultation with neuropaediatrician at 21. 7% of patients received antiepileptic drugs after the first seizure. Four percent of patients had afebrile seizures subsequent to the FS. Conclusions: in general terms, these results coincide with the data reported by studies in other countries.
