Introduction: pediatric patients thoughts about surgery are filled with fantasies and excessive loads of anxiety that avoids emotional control and adequate postoperative recovery. Our work hypothesis tries to shows that preoperative surgical psychoprophylaxis (SP) help develop defensive mechanisms that reduce the impact that lies within a surgical procedure. Objective: demonstrate the benefit of surgical psychoprophylaxis in school age children faced with an ordinary surgical procedure. Materials and methods: thirty patients from the Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell between the ages of five and twelve were studied and divided into two groups of fifteen each test group (TG) and sample group (SG). The TG received basic information, without psychological intervention. SG received detailed information with psychological preparation. Comparative study between both groups was made through psychological evaluation and biological parameters variations. Results and conclusions: SP group facilitated the creation of effective defenses in this group of patients allowing an adaptive conduct with an amount of anxiety that each child could control, diminishing the potential traumatic effect of the experience, demonstrating to diminish the psycho-biological impact and its harmful effects in the stage of immediate postoperative recovery.
