We studied 464 children with dog bites who were assisted in a EMS in the period 9/1/99 to 12/31/01. Medical records were analysed and data was confirmed by telephone. The median age was 7 years (3 months-14 years range), whit a prevalence of male (65%). In 33% of cases, the dog were known by the victim. In 37% of the cases the animal had already bitten, and in 66% of the cases, it was provoked. The most involved dog breed was the crossbread or hybrid (24%), followed by the german shepard (12%). Most injuries were minor and occured during spring and summer. Injuries in extremities were the most frecuent in all ages. However, face injuries were statistically the most frecuent in children under 5 years old. The prevailing injuries were lacerations (49%), being necessary medical aproximation or surgical suture in 20% of the cases. Half of the patiens were prescribed antibiotics at the time of medical attention. 13 patiens (2,8%) were hospitalized after surgical repair. There were no cases of rabies or tetanus in the survey. The reports at Zoonosis were low.
