MATIJASEVICH, ALICIA et al. Factores de riesgo para muy bajo peso al nacer y peso al nacer entre 1.500-2.499 gramos: Un estudio del sector público de Montevideo, Uruguay. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2004, vol.75, n.1, pp.26-35. ISSN 1688-1249.

Introduction: newborns with less than 1500 grams (very low birthweight, VLBW) have the highest morbidity and mortality rates and prevent their birth is a major challenge for public health policy makers. Objective: this study was designed to assess risk factors for VLBW births and births with weights between 1.500-2.499 g in the Public Sector of Montevideo, Uruguay. Methods: the study analized data of 22990 registers of single livebirths from January 1st 1998 to December 31st 1999 born in "Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell" and "Servicio de Perinatología del Banco de Previsión Social". Were studied 22 potential determinants and compared risk factors between the two groups of birthweight. Results: 1,8% were VLBW and 8,6% weighed between 1.500-2.499 g.VLBW infants were mostly preterms and adequate for gestational age, whereas 40% of the 1.500-2.499 g group were term neonates and half of them small for gestational age (SGA). In the adjusted analyses, no antenatal care, interpregnancy interval £12 months and gestational diseases like pre-eclampsia, bleeding and premature labor showed higher effect in the VLBW group. Smoking during pregnancy was only related to the 1.500-2.499 grams group. Conclusion: different maternal determinants -related to gestational duration or fetal growth- were associated with VLBW and births between 1.500-2.499 grams respectively.
