QUIAN, JORGE; CERISOLA, ALFREDO; FERNANDEZ, ANA  e  RUSSOMANO, FLOR. Infecciones respiratorias bajas mixtas por Bordetella pertussis y virus.: Análisis de dos casos clínicos . Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2003, vol.74, n.4, pp.278-281. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary  Lower respiratory tract infections in young infants may have numerous etiologies. The research has technical difficulties and is costly. These infections may be caused by only one pathogen, or be mixed infections, caused by more than one pathogen concomitantly or successively. Scientific publications are paying attention again to infections by Bordetella pertussis. The emphasis is put in respiratory infections among non-completely immunized infants and adolescents or adults with persistent cough. Two clinical cases of mixed respiratory infections caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria are presented in this article. In one case the bacteria was associated to an adenovirus; in the other to a respiratory syncitial virus. Both of them appeared as acute respiratory infections and required admission in intensive care units and mechanical ventilation. The etiological identification of Bordetella pertussis enables to take adequate measures of treatment, isolation and prophylaxis.
