ALONSO, Omar. Impacto clínico de la tomografía de emisión por positrones (PET) en pacientes oncológicos y su potencial aplicación en el contexto sanitario y académico nacional. Rev. Méd. Urug. [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.3, pp.169-178. ISSN 1688-0390.
Summary Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical nuclear technique that may prevent cancer using mechanisms to alter neoplastic process. In this review we describe oncologic applications of PET and analyze the national sanitary and academic context where those could take place. The most used trazer in oncology is a fluor marker glucose analogue: 18F-2-fluor-2-desoxi-D-glucose (FDG). In that way, PET may detect tumor retention of FDG due to a mayor glucolitic index of cancer cells. Also, PET tomography allows to study the entire body in the same exploration and some are coupled to a Computarized axial tomography (CAT/PET). Diagnosis and categorization of stages could be determine in 90% of patients with cancer using PET-FDG, a higher percent compared to the obtained by conventional imaging techniques. Moreover, responses to treatment and relevant prognostic information could be known in advance.
