TENENBAUM EWIG, Gabriel. Youth violence, families and streets: where are the adolescents in conflict with the law from Montevideo “rescued”?. Rev. Cien. Soc. [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.42, pp.151-175. ISSN 0797-5538.  https://doi.org/10.26489/rvs.v31i42.7.

The study of family behavior is essential to understand the juvenile offenses and desistance from crime. The aim of this paper is to show that, in an earlier moment before the detection by the punitive system, there are some family “risk factors” that increase the adolescent’s probability of offending and, also, to show, in a second moment after the detection of the punitive system, how the family becomes the “care environment” for the adolescents to return and “be rescued”. This process is known as the paradox of the family as origin and destination of adolescent offenders. The study is based on fifteen interviews -with combine features of the open and biographical interviews- to Montevideo adolescents in conflict with the law.

Palavras-chave : Juvenile offending; broken homes; family conflict; family care; community social disorganization.
