Frente a una clínica inespecífica en la que predomina la fiebre, los vómitos y la cefalea, el diagnóstico de malaria debe sospecharse en viajeros, tropas militares e inmigrantes de regiones endémicas. Se presenta un caso de malaria por Plasmodium vivax en un varón joven al retornar a Uruguay posterior a un viaje al sudeste asiático. Su enfermedad, caracterizada por múltiples episodios recurrentes se interpretó como una evolución típica de la malaria causada por P. vivax por sus formas hepáticas latentes. El caso supuso un reto diagnóstico y terapéutico dado la clínica inespecífica inicial y el acceso oportuno al tratamiento de primera línea. Destaca la importancia del interrogatorio epidemiológico y el rol del equipo de laboratorio clínico en la confirmación diagnóstica en países de baja incidencia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium which has a low incidence in countries of the Southern Cone countries of the American continent. When faced with nonspecific symptoms such as fever, vomiting and headaches, a diagnosis of malaria should be suspected in travellers, returning military troops and immigrants from endemic regions. We present a case of Plasmodium vivax malaria in a young man who returned to Uruguay after traveling in Southeast Asia. His illness, marked by multiple recurrent episodes, was interpreted as a typical presentation of malaria disease caused by P. vivax, due to its latent hepatic forms. This case posed a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge given the initial nonspecific clinical presentation and timely access to first line treatment. It highlights the importance of an adequate epidemiological anamnesis and the role of the clinical laboratory team in confirming the diagnosis, especially in low incidence countries.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: A malária é uma doença parasitária de baixa incidência nos países do Cone Sul do continente americano, causada por protozoários do gênero Plasmodium. Diante de um quadro clínico inespecífico em que predominam febre, vômitos e cefaleia, o diagnóstico de malária deve ser suspeitado em viajantes, tropas militares e imigrantes de regiões endémicas. Apresenta-se um caso de malária por Plasmodium vivax em um jovem do sexo masculino ao retornar ao Uruguai após uma viagem ao sudeste asiático. Sua doença, caracterizada por múltiplos episódios recorrentes, foi interpretada como uma evolução típica da malária causada por P. vivax por suas formas hepáticas latentes. O caso representou um desafio diagnóstico e terapêutico, dada a clínica inicial inespecífica e o acesso oportuno ao tratamento de primeira linha. Destaca-se a importância do questionário epidemiológico e o papel da equipa de laboratório clínico na confirmação do diagnóstico em países de baixa incidência.]]></p></abstract>
