El trabajo fue realizado en dos años (A) consecutivos sobre 23 ha de Lolium multiflorum LE 284.Cuarenta y ocho novillos Hereford (año 1) y 36 novillos (año 2) fueron sorteados a 12 grupos y estos a uno de cuatrotratamientos (T): pastoreo sin suplementación (PAS); pastoreo más suministro de heno de moha (Setaria italica) restringido(HR) o ad libitum (HAD); y suplementación con grano de sorgo molido (SG, 1 % de peso vivo PV). El experimento fueanalizado según un diseño de parcelas al azar con arreglo factorial de tratamientos. La biomasa disponible fue mayor en elaño 2 (1932 vs. 2806 kg/ha, P &lt; 0,01), sin diferencias debidas a T (P &gt; 0,05), ni a la interacción A×T (P &gt; 0,05). A×T tampocoafectó ninguna de las variables de performance en pastoreo o a la faena (P &gt; 0,05). SG incrementó el consumo, la gananciade peso vivo (GP), el PV a la faena, el peso y engrasamiento de la canal con relación a PAS (P &lt; 0,05). Por el contrario niHR y HAD mejoraron el desempeño a la faena con relación a PAS (P &gt; 0,05). Estos resultados no permiten sustentar lahipótesis de que el suministro de cantidades restringidas de heno contribuiría a mejorar la utilización del forraje consumido.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: This study assessed the effect of supplementation with concentrate or roughage on the performance of steers grazing on ryegrass previous to slaughter. The experiment was conducted on two consecutive years (Y) on 23 ha of Lolium multiflorum LE284. Forty-eight Hereford steers (year 1) and 36 (year 2), were randomly allotted to 12 groups and one of four treatments (T):grazing without supplementation (GR); grazing plus grass hay (Setaria itálica) restricted (HR) or ad libitum (HAD); andsupplementation with ground sorghum grain (SG, 1 % live weight, LW). Data were analyzed according to acompletely randomized design with factorial arrangement of treatments. Available forage biomass was higher in year 2 (1932vs. 2806 kg/ha, P &lt; 0.01), with no differences due to T (P &gt; 0.05), or to the interaction Y × T (P &gt; 0.05). Interaction Y×T did notaffect any of the performance or carcass variables (P &gt; 0.05). SG increased daily intake, live weight gain (LWG), LW atslaughter, carcass weight and carcass fat compared to GR (P &lt; 0.05). Conversely, neither HR nor HAD improved cattleperformance at slaughter compared to GR (P &gt; 0.05). These results do not sustain the hypothesis that supplying restrictedamounts of grass hay would improve the utilization of ingested pasture.]]></p></abstract>
