Este vínculo tiene aspectos positivos y negativos para ambas especies. Entre los aspectos negativos para los humanos, las mordeduras de perros a personas son un grave problema de salud pública tanto en Uruguay como a nivel mundial y afectan en mayor medida a niños varones menores de 14 años. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la tasa de mordeduras de perros a personas por departamento en Uruguay acorde a la época del año, así como también determinar si la densidad de la población por departamento está asociada a la tasa de mordeduras. La fuente de información fueron las notificaciones recibidas en el Ministerio de Salud Pública entre enero de 2010 y diciembre de 2020. En dicho período se recibieron un total de 31 634 notificaciones por mordedura de perro, de las cuales 54,30 % corresponden al área metropolitana, con tasas de 86,46 y 80,95 cada 100 000 habitantes para Montevideo y Canelones, respectivamente. Existe una amplia variación en cuanto a las tasas de mordedura por departamento, Florida presentó el valor mínimo, con 22,10 (IC 95 %: 8,20-36,00), y Flores el máximo, con 229,00 (IC 95 %: 133,70-149,30). Con respecto a la estación del año, en 14 departamentos hubo efecto significativo de la estación, lo que evidencia mayor incidencia de mordeduras en primavera y verano. No encontramos correlación entre la densidad de población y la tasa de mordeduras. Este estudio es el primero en describir la tasa de mordeduras de perro por departamento y su distribución según estación del año y la correlación con la densidad de población, se deben profundizar los estudios en cada departamento y realizar evaluaciones locales.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The human-animal bond, especially dogs, has increased in recent years, to the point where they are often considered part of the family. This bond has both positive and negative aspects for both species. Among the negative aspects for humans, dog bites on humans are a serious public health problem in Uruguay and worldwide, affecting mostly boys under 14 years of age. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of dog bites on humans by department in Uruguay according to the time of year, as well as to determine whether population density by department is associated with the bite rate. The source of information was notifications received by the Ministry of Public Health between January 2010 and December 2020. During this period, a total of 31,634 dog bite reports were received, of which 54.30 % corresponded to the metropolitan area, with rates of 86.46 and 80.95 per 100,000 inhabitants for Montevideo and Canelones, respectively. There is wide variation in bite rates by department, with Florida having the lowest rate at 22.10 (95 % CI: 8.20-36.00) and Flores the highest at 229.00 (95 % CI: 133.70-149.30). Regarding the season, there was a significant seasonal effect in 14 departments, with a higher incidence of bites in spring and summer. We found no correlation between population density and bite rates. This study is the first to describe the dog bite rate by department and its distribution by season and correlation with population density. Further studies should be conducted in each department and local assessments should be made.]]></p></abstract>

Entre os aspectos negativos para os humanos, as mordidas de cães representam um grave problema de saúde pública no Uruguai e no mundo, afetando principalmente meninos menores de 14 anos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a taxa de mordidas de cães por departamento no Uruguai, de acordo com a época do ano, bem como determinar se a densidade populacional por departamento está associada à taxa de mordidas. A fonte de informação foram as notificações recebidas pelo Ministério da Saúde Pública entre janeiro de 2010 e dezembro de 2020. Nesse período, foram recebidas 31 634 notificações de mordidas de cães, das quais 54,30 % corresponderam à região metropolitana, com taxas de 86,46 e 80,95 por 100 000 habitantes para Montevidéu e Canelones, respectivamente. Há uma ampla variação nas taxas de mordidas por departamento, com Flórida apresentando a menor taxa, 22,10 (IC 95 %: 8,20-36,00) e Flores, a maior, 229,00 (IC 95%: 133,70-149,30). Em relação à estação do ano, houve um efeito sazonal significativo em 14 departamentos, com maior incidência de mordidas na primavera e no verão. Não encontramos correlação entre a densidade populacional e as taxas de mordidas. Este estudo é o primeiro a descrever a taxa de mordidas de cães por departamento, sua distribuição por estação e correlação com a densidade populacional.
