Abstract: The article presents the internationally accepted criteria for defining authorship in scientific articles and how these criteria have been standardized over time. The requirements the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) considers are presented, and what justifies and does not justify authorship in a scientific article is discussed. It analyses how aspects such as collaborations between research groups or the roles played by each team member can affect or distort these definitions. However, this should not occur since each journal defines criteria. The contributions of each author, determined through an explicit taxonomy, support the definition of authorship. It is essential to differentiate the roles of collaborators, or team members, from those of authors of a scientific article. Among other aspects, authorship implies assuming full responsibility for the article's content. Finally, a distinction is made between the responsibilities of an author and the author’s copyright. The responsibility implied by the definition of authorship is raised, and how the definition of authorship should ethically support the research work.
</abstract>
