Las presentaciones más típicas son: leishmaniosis cutánea (LC), leishmaniosis mucocutánea (LMC), y leishmaniosis visceral (LV). Las lesiones y la progresión de cada enfermedad están dadas por la especie de Leishmania. Estos parásitos son transmitidos por dípteros (flebotomíneos). Se han identificado a la fecha, varios géneros de flebotomíneos, siendo, Phlebotomus (viejo mundo) y Lutzomyia (nuevo mundo) los más importantes para la transmisión de Leishmania spp. Algunas de las especies de Leishmania son exclusivas del viejo mundo, y otras del continente Americano. Sin embargo, la especie más cosmopolita es L. infanutm, uno de los agente etiológicos más importantes de leishmaniosis visceral, ya que puede ser transmitida tanto por flebotomíneos del viejo como del nuevo mundo. El ciclo de L. infantum involucra a un vector biológico (Lutzomyia longipalpis) y un hospedero vertebrado (en nuestra región, el perro). Tal cual ocurre en humanos, la LV en perros es una enfermedad crónica y multisistémica. El espectro y gravedad de los síntomas varía ampliamente, pudiéndose encontrar perros poli, oligo o asintomáticos. El cometido de esta revisión bibliográfica es abordar diferentes aspectos sobre la epidemiología y control, tanto de Leishmania infantum como de su vector principal, Lu. longipalpis.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary Leishmaniasis is a complex of diseases caused by parasitic protozoan of genus Leishmania. The typical disease presentations are cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Lesions and progression of each disease vary depending of the Leishmania species. These parasites are transmitted by dipetera (phlebotominae sand flies). Until now, there are several sand fly genera identified, being, Phlebotomus (Old World) and Lutzomyia (New World) the most important for Leishmania spp. transmission. Some of the Leishmania species are exclusive of the Old World, meanwhile others, are for the Americas. However, the most cosmopolitan species is L. infantum, one of the most important etiological agent of VL, since can be transmitted by sand flies of the Old and New World. The life cycle of L. infantum involves a biological vector (Lutzomyia longipalpis) and a vertebrate host (in this region, the dog). Similarly as in humans, VL in dogs is a chronic and multisystemic malaise. Severity and range of symptoms varies, finding poly, oligo and asymptomatic dogs. The aim of this review is to discuss different epidemiological aspects and control of L. infantum as well as its main vector, Lu. longipalpis.]]></p></abstract>
