However, their excessive application causes irreversible damage to the environment, beneficial fauna and human health. This situation has highlighted the need for alternative strategies such as biological control agents. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) promotes the reduction of insecticide use through the incorporation of natural enemies. In greenhouse horticulture systems, effective biological control agents must exhibit rapid colonization, persistence under low prey densities and opportunistic feeding habits. Tupiocoris cucurbitaceus, a predatory mirid, has shown potential for controlling whiteflies in tomato crops, although its field performance remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate T. cucurbitaceus as a biological control agent against Trialeurodes vaporariorum, optimize its release strategy and assess its dispersion in the system. Additionally, the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was tested for its efficacy against whiteflies, offering a complementary and environmentally safe alternative. The use of sex pheromone traps for the control of Phthorimaea absoluta was also evaluated in greenhouse condition. Results demonstrated the high predation potential of T. cucurbitaceus, supporting its role in whitefly control. Nevertheless, further research is needed to understand the factors influencing its dispersal and persistence in crops. B. bassiana significantly reduced whitefly populations, regardless of the dose applied. Mass trapping with synthetic sex pheromones proved to be an effective and compatible method for controlling P. absoluta. These strategies show promise for inclusion in sustainable IPM programs.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: En agricultura convencional se utilizan insecticidas químicos para el control de las plagas, sin embargo, su uso en exceso provoca daños irreversibles al medio ambiente, la fauna benéfica y la salud humana, siendo necesaria la incorporación de medidas de control alternativas, como el uso de agentes biológicos. En la actualidad, se trabaja para reducir las aplicaciones de químicos y promover el manejo integrado de plagas (MIP). En sistemas de producción intensiva la mosca blanca de los invernaderos, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), es considerada una de las plagas principales de tomate en Uruguay. Tras años de investigación, se ha buscado mejorar su gestión con la utilización del depredador Tupiocoris cucurbitaceus (Spinola) (Hemiptera: Miridae) y del entomopatógeno Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin, siendo necesario investigar su eficacia de control, estrategia de liberación y dispersión en el sistema. Otra plaga importante en tomate es la polilla Phthorimaea absoluta, cuyo manejo se basa en el uso de insecticidas con baja eficiencia de control. Se evaluó para su control la utilización de feromonas sexuales para trampeo masivo. De los estudios realizados, se pudo concluir que T. cucurbitaceus muestra un elevado potencial de consumo de las moscas blancas (p &lt; 0,01), resultando ser un depredador efectivo de dicha plaga en el cultivo de tomate. Sin embargo, continúa siendo una especie poco estudiada. Para su utilización como agente de biocontrol, resulta esencial conocer cuáles son los factores que determinan su dispersión y permanencia en el cultivo mediante estrategias de conservación, como la diversificación vegetal en el predio y/o la planificación a escala del paisaje. En relación con los otros métodos de control evaluados, se demostró la potencialidad de B. bassiana para el control de T. vaporariorum en tomate (F = 10.27, p &lt; 0.0001), si bien consideramos necesarios estudios complementarios de compatibilidad con entomófagos a fin de ser incorporados en una estrategia MIP. Además, el trampeo masivo utilizando feromona sexual sintética de la polilla P. absoluta resultó ser una técnica de control eficiente de esta plaga (p &lt; 0.05) y compatible con el programa de control biológico.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: Na agricultura convencional, inseticidas químicos são usados para controlar pragas; seu uso excessivo está causando danos ao meio ambiente, à fauna benéfica e à saúde humana. É necessário incorporar medidas alternativas de controle, como agentes biológicos. Em sistemas de produção intensiva, a mosca-branca, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), é considerada uma das principais pragas do tomateiro no Uruguai. Após vários anos de pesquisa, buscou-se seu manejo com o uso do predador Tupiocoris cucurbitaceus (Hemiptera: Miridae) e do entomopatógeno Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin. É necessário investigar sua eficácia de controle, ajustar estratégias de liberação e avaliar sua dispersão. Estudos de eficácia foram conduzidos em estufas experimentais e avaliações de liberação-dispersão foram realizadas em estufas comerciais. Outra praga importante do tomateiro é a mariposa Phthorimaea absoluta, cujo manejo depende do uso de inseticidas com baixa eficiência de controle. Foi avaliado o uso de feromônios sexuais para captura em massa. Com base em nossos estudos, podemos concluir que T. cucurbitaceus tem alto potencial de consumo de moscas-brancas (p&lt; 0,01) e pode ser usado como um predador eficaz. No entanto, continua sendo uma espécie pouco estudada, necessitando mais pesquisas. Para seu uso como biocontrolador, é essencial entender os fatores que determinam sua disseminação e persistência na cultura por meio de estratégias de conservação, como diversificação de plantas e/ou planejamento paisagístico. Aos outros métodos de controle avaliados, B. bassiana demonstrou potencial para controlar T. vaporariorum em plantas de tomate (F= 10,27, p&lt; 0,0001); consideramos necessários estudos de compatibilidade entre entomófagos e entomopatógenos para incorporá-los a uma estratégia MIP.
