The use of abiotic elicitors as phosphites is being studied for the induction of fruit resistance as an alternative to the use of synthetic fungicides. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of phosphites on the content of total phenols, chlorogenic acid and changes in susceptibility to M. fructicola in peach fruits. Peach fruits of the cultivars Flordaking and Elegant Lady were treated with potassium- and calcium-phosphites, and harvested at three development stages: green fruit (gf), pit hardening (ph) and harvest time (ht). After harvesting, half of them were inoculated with a conidia suspension of M. fructicola under laboratory conditions. Total phenols and chlorogenic acid content were assayed on the skin of the fruits. Results showed different behaviors according to the cultivar. In Flordaking, the phosphite treatment allowed an increase in the content of total phenols in the stages of gf and ph, but not for chlorogenic acid. In the presence of inoculum, chlorogenic acid decreased, but not the total phenols. The Elegant Lady did not show differences in the content of total phenols and chlorogenic acid after the phosphite treatments. Both metabolites exhibited a seasonal behavior.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: Monilinia fructicola es un patógeno fúngico responsable de la podredumbre morena de la fruta en muchas especies del género Prunus. Se está estudiando el uso de inductores abióticos como fosfitos para la inducción de resistencia en los frutos como alternativa al uso de fungicidas sintéticos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de los fosfitos sobre el contenido de fenoles totales, ácido clorogénico y los cambios de susceptibilidad a M. fructicola en los frutos de durazno. Frutos de los cultivares Flordaking y Elegant Lady fueron tratados con fosfitos de potasio y calcio, y cosechados en tres estados de desarrollo: fruto verde (gf), endurecimiento de carozo (ph) y cosecha comercial (ht). Después de la cosecha, la mitad de los frutos tratados fueron inoculados con una suspensión de conidios de M. fructicola en condiciones de laboratorio. Las determinaciones de fenoles totales y ácido clorogénico se analizaron en la piel de las frutas. Los resultados fueron diferentes según el cultivar. En Flordaking, el tratamiento con fosfito condujo a un aumento en el contenido de fenoles totales en las etapas de gf y ph, no así para el ácido clorogénico. En presencia del inóculo, el ácido clorogénico disminuyó, pero no los fenoles totales. Elegant Lady no mostró diferencias en el contenido de fenoles totales y ácido clorogénico después de los tratamientos con fosfito. Ambos metabolitos exhibieron un comportamiento estacional.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: Monilinia fructicola é um patógeno fúngico responsável pela podridão-parda dos frutos em muitas espécies do gênero Prunus. O uso de indutores abióticos, como os fosfitos, para a indução de resistência nos frutos, está sendo estudado como alternativa ao uso de fungicidas sintéticos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito dos fosfitos no conteúdo de fenóis totais, ácido clorogênico e alterações na suscetibilidade a M. fructicola em frutos de pêssego. Frutos das cultivares Flordaking e Elegant Lady, tratados com fosfitos de potássio e cálcio, foram avaliados e colhidos em três estágios de desenvolvimento: fruta verde (GF), endurecimento do caroço (PH) e colheita comercial (HT). Do total de frutos tratados e colhidos, metade deles foram inoculados com uma suspensão de conídios de M. fructicola em condições de laboratório. As determinações de fenóis totais e ácido clorídrico foram analisadas na casca dos frutos. Os resultados mostraram comportamentos diferentes de acordo com a cultivar. Nos frutos de &#8216;Flordaking&#8217;, o tratamento com fosfito expressou um aumento no conteúdo de fenóis totais nos estágios de GF e PH, porém não para o ácido clorogênico. Na presença do inóculo, o ácido clorogênico diminuiu, mas não o conteúdo de fenóis totais. Para &#8216;Elegant Lady&#8217; não se obtiveram diferenças no conteúdo de fenóis totais e ácido clorogênico após tratamentos com fosfito. Ambos os metabólitos exibiram comportamento sazonal.]]></p></abstract>
