No Brasil, tem importância principalmente no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, que é o maior produtor brasileiro de pêssegos. Identificada pela primeira vez no final da década de 1970, na região de Pelotas, a síndrome vem provocando prejuízos, com intensidades variáveis de um ano para outro. Diversas causas já foram relatadas pela literatura nacional e internacional, envolvendo fatores bióticos e abióticos. No Rio Grande do Sul, devido ao uso predominante de misturas de caroços da indústria conserveira para a produção de porta-enxertos, não é possível conhecer a identidade varietal do sistema radicular das plantas nos pomares comerciais, o que provoca heterogeneidade entre plantas. Por outro lado, essa variabilidade genética e pressão de seleção ambiental podem ser aproveitadas em um programa de seleção clonal in situ, na busca por fontes de tolerância. Em outra estratégia também desenvolvida pela Embrapa Clima Temperado, avaliações de cultivares, espécies e híbridos interespecíficos como porta-enxertos também estão em andamento. No presente trabalho, são relatados os principais avanços técnico-científicos sobre a morte precoce do pessegueiro no Rio Grande do Sul e o foco das pesquisas na busca de porta-enxertos tolerantes e mudas de qualidade.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The Peach Tree Short Life (PTSL) is a syndrome that causes severe damage to peach trees, usually between one and eight-years-old, which can lead to the scion death. In Brazil, it has importance mainly in the Rio Grande do Sul State, which is the largest Brazilian peach producer. First reported in the Pelotas area, in late 1970s, the syndrome continues to cause damage, with varying intensities among years. Several causes have been reported in national and international literature, involving biotic and abiotic factors. In Rio Grande do Sul, due to the predominant use of mixtures of scion peach pits from canning industry for rootstock production, it is not possible to know varietal identity of tree root system in commercial orchards. This genetic variability which causes heterogeneity among trees, can at the same time under the environmental selection pressure, be used in a clonal selection program in situ, in search for tolerant sources. In another strategy developed by Embrapa Clima Temperado, evaluation of cultivars, species and interspecific hybrids as rootstocks are also underway. In the present paper, we report main technical and scientific advances on PTSL in Rio Grande do Sul and the focus on search for tolerant rootstocks and quality of nursery trees.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: La muerte prematura del duraznero es un síndrome que causa serios daños a las plantas, normalmente de entre uno y ocho años de edad, pudiendo llevar a la muerte de la copa. En Brasil, tiene importancia principalmente en el estado de Rio Grande do Sul, que es el mayor productor de duraznos del país. Fue identificada por primera vez a fines de la década de 1970, en la región de Pelotas. Este síndrome viene provocando perjuicios, con intensidades variables de un año a otro. Diversas causas ya fueron descriptas en la literatura nacional e internacional, incluyendo factores bióticos y abióticos. En Rio Grande do Sul, debido al uso predominante de mezclas de carozos de la industria de conservas para la producción de portainjertos, no es posible conocer la identidad varietal del sistema radicular de las plantas en los montes comerciales, provocando heterogeneidad entre plantas. Por otro lado, la presión de selección ambiental puede ser aprovechada en un programa de selección in situ, en la búsqueda de fuentes de tolerancia. Otra estrategia que está siendo desarrollada por Embrapa Clima Temperado consiste en la evaluación de cultivos, especies e híbridos interespecíficos como portainjertos. En el presente trabajo, son presentados los principales avances técnicos y científicos sobre la muerte prematura del duraznero en Rio Grande do Sul y el foco de las investigaciones en la búsqueda de portainjertos tolerantes y plantas de vivero de calidad.]]></p></abstract>
