Es un tema de investigación reciente, desde que se cuenta con la medición de CO2 transcutánea. La prevalencia en pacientes con apneas del sueño, y sus factores predictivos, no son completamente conocidos. Si bien se han descrito distintos fenotipos de apneas del sueño, el registro de PtCO2 no se ha usado frecuentemente para su clasificación. El objetivo de este estudio es presentar los resultados de 242 pacientes que consultaron por apneas obstructivas del sueño, a quienes se estudió con polisomnografía completa y presión transcutánea de CO2. El aumento de CO2 durante el sueño estuvo presente en 23.6 % de los pacientes. El valor de PtCO2 de vigilia permitió clasificarlos en grupos con distintos grados de severidad y fue el predictor de aumento más importante. El bicarbonato plasmático, el tiempo transcurrido en apneas y los períodos de sueño REM con desaturación de oxígeno persistente, fueron los hechos frecuentemente asociados. La inclusión de la hipercapnia durante el sueño, entre las características para subclasificar al síndrome, podría contribuir al tratamiento específico y personalizado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[SUMMARY Hypercapnia resulting from sleep apnea is a significant pathophysiological consequence that can lead to cardiac, circulatory, neurological, and renal dysfunction. This topic of research has been the subject of recent research since transcutaneous CO2 measurement became available. Its prevalence in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and its predictive factors are not fully understood. Although different sleep apnea phenotypes have been described, PtCO2 monitoring has not been frequently used for classification. The objective of this study is to present a review of 242 patients presenting for sleep apnea, who underwent complete polysomnography and transcutaneous CO2 pressure monitoring. Increased CO2 during sleep was present in 23.6% of patients. The waking PtCO2 level allowed classification into groups with varying degrees of severity and was the most significant predictor of increased CO2. Plasma bicarbonate, time spent in apnea, and REM sleep periods with persistent oxygen desaturation were the most frequently associated factors. Including sleep hypercapnia among the characteristics for subclassifying the syndrome could contribute to specific and personalized treatment.]]></p></abstract>

É um assunto de pesquisa recente, desde que a medição transcutânea de CO2 está disponível. Sua prevalência em pacientes com apneia do sono obstrutivas e seus fatores preditivos não são totalmente conhecidos. Embora diferentes fenótipos de apneia do sono tenham sido descritos, o registro de PtCO2 não tem sido frequentemente usado para sua classificação. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar os dados de 242 pacientes que consultaram por apneia do sono, que foram submetidos a polissonografia completa e pressão transcutânea de CO2. O aumento de CO2 durante o sono estava presente em 23.6% dos pacientes. O valor de PtCO2 ao acordar permitiu classificá-los em grupos com diferentes graus de gravidade e foi o mais importante preditor de aumento. Bicarbonato plasmático, tempo gasto em apneias e períodos de sono REM com dessaturação persistente de oxigênio foram eventos frequentemente associados.
