A perspetiva teórica que enforma esta análise é a fonologia generativa que tem como princípio a existência de níveis separados: o nível fonológico em que atuam processos fonológicos, e o nível fonético que contém as formas de superfície resultantes da atuação desses processos. As explicações apresentadas podem servir de apoio no ensino do Português como língua segunda ou estrangeira, tanto no esclarecimento dos professores sobre questões linguísticas e seus resultados na pronúncia da língua como na elucidação dos aprendentes. A dimensão pedagógica deve provir de uma reflexão adequada sobre as propostas aqui apresentadas]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The goal of this paper is the analysis of Portuguese vowels in European (EP) and Brazilian (BP) varieties, both in stressed and unstressed syllable, making a distinction between vowels resulting from categorical rules that occur in all Portuguese varieties (as vowel harmony that applies on root verbal vowels) from vowel alternations and variation, namely in unstressed syllable, that cause a clear distinction between EP and BP. The theoretical framework that sustains this analysis is the generative phonology that considers the existence of separate tiers: the phonological tier where processes that have as a result the phonetic surface forms apply. The explanations we present may reinforce the Portuguese language teaching as a second or a foreign language in clarifying certain linguistics questions related to the pronunciation of Portuguese and the elucidation of the students. The pedagogical dimension can issue from an adequate reflexion about the proposals presented here]]></p></abstract>

Os diversos processos fonol&oacute;gicos e fon&eacute;ticos que funcionam na utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o da l&iacute;ngua t&ecirc;m como resultado varia&ccedil;&otilde;es que, no n&iacute;vel fon&eacute;tico, distinguem variedades da l&iacute;ngua portuguesa, nomeadamente as variedades que s&atilde;o objeto deste artigo: Portugu&ecirc;s Europeu e Portugu&ecirc;s Brasileiro.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>             <p style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 1cm; line-height: normal;"> <span lang="PT"><font size="2">Para compreendermos as varia&ccedil;&otilde;es a que est&atilde;o sujeitas as vogais fonol&oacute;gicas &eacute; necess&aacute;rio considerarmos que os segmentos fonol&oacute;gicos s&atilde;o unidades complexas que t&ecirc;m propriedades identificadoras denominadas <i style="">tra&ccedil;os distintivos</i>. Os tra&ccedil;os est&atilde;o organizados hierarquicamente e dependem de <i style="">n&oacute;s de classe</i> que re&uacute;nem tra&ccedil;os distintivos com propriedades comuns. Para a an&aacute;lise da rela&ccedil;&atilde;o entre os tra&ccedil;os identificadores e as altera&ccedil;&otilde;es das vogais fonol&oacute;gicas, s&atilde;o necess&aacute;rios e suficientes dois n&oacute;s de classe: Altura, de que dependem os tra&ccedil;os [alto] e [baixo] e Ponto de Articula&ccedil;&atilde;o, de que dependem os tra&ccedil;os [arredondado] e [recuado]. O <b style="">Quadro II</b> apresenta os quatro tra&ccedil;os designados, a que correspondem os sinais [+] e [-] conforme a vogal em quest&atilde;o for identificada pela presen&ccedil;a ou aus&ecirc;ncia do tra&ccedil;o. Na gram&aacute;tica do portugu&ecirc;s contempor&acirc;neo <a name="-Cunha_e_Cintra_1984"></a><a href="#Cunha_Celso">(Cunha e Cintra, 1984)</a> a descri&ccedil;&atilde;o da harmoniza&ccedil;&atilde;o voc&aacute;lica incide sobre os Presentes do Indicativo e do Subjuntivo e sobre os Imperativos Afirmativo e Negativo (formas que se identificam com as dos referidos presentes). A altern&acirc;ncia entre as vogais do radical em cada paradigma e entre vogais correspondentes entre os tr&ecirc;s paradigmas (1&ordf;, 2&ordf; e 3&ordf; conjuga&ccedil;&otilde;es) segue o modelo dos verbos apresentados em (2.2.), estendendo-se a aplica&ccedil;&atilde;o, em <a href="#Cunha_Celso">Cunha e Cintra</a>, a verbos como <i>levar</i> e <i>lograr</i>, <i>dever</i> e <i>mover</i>, <i>servir</i> e <i>dormir</i>, <i>frigir</i> e <i>acudir</i>. </font> </span></p>             <p style="line-height: normal;"><span lang="X-NONE"><o:p><font size="2">&nbsp;</font></o:p></span></p>             <p style="text-indent: 1cm; line-height: normal;"><span lang="X-NONE"> <font size="2">A gram&aacute;tica hist&oacute;rica procurou uma explica&ccedil;&atilde;o destas altern&acirc;ncias voc&aacute;licas reportando-se, ao &eacute;timo latino, os aspetos morfol&oacute;gicos e fon&eacute;ticos deste caso particular da gram&aacute;tica do portugu&ecirc;s (<a name="-Williams"></a><a href="#Williams_E._B">Williams</a> [1938], 1961: 213-221; <a name="-Jos&eacute;_Joaquim_Nunes"></a><a href="#Nunes_J._J.">Jos&eacute; Joaquim Nunes</a> [1919], 1951: 282-290; <a name="-Piel_1944"></a><a href="#Piel_J._M">Piel 1944</a>). Se o fechamento da primeira pessoa do Indicativo e das formas do Subjuntivo se deve &agrave; influ&ecirc;ncia assimilat&oacute;ria da vogal final, as formas do Subjuntivo resultam da &ldquo;solidariedade morfol&oacute;gica&rdquo; com a primeira pessoa do Indicativo (ou seja, um processo de analogia) <a href="#Piel_J._M">(1944: 373)</a>. Em dialetos do PE existem exemplos de vogais recuadas e n&atilde;o palatais como /u/ e /o/ pronunciadas com palataliza&ccedil;&atilde;o (<i style="">uva, </i>[&uuml;]va; <i>pouco</i>, p[&ouml;]co; <i style="">boi, </i>b[&ouml;]i). Compare-se a divis&atilde;o de <i style="">palavra</i> em s&iacute;labas ou em segmentos fon&eacute;ticos: tanto uma pessoa n&atilde;o alfabetizada como uma crian&ccedil;a em idade pr&eacute; escolar podem com facilidade dividir em &ldquo;peda&ccedil;os&rdquo; o exemplo (pa-la-vra) mas ser&aacute; mais dif&iacute;cil distinguir todos os segmentos fonol&oacute;gicos que o <span class="SpellE">constituem</span> ([p]-[&#592;]-[l]-[a] [v]-[&#638;]-[&#592;])</font></span><a name="ftnref13"><font size="2"></font></a><font size="2">[13]<span lang="X-NONE">. Tamb&eacute;m se podem aceitar separa&ccedil;&otilde;es sil&aacute;bicas como a-dmirar em que a consoante [d], a primeira da sequ&ecirc;ncia [dm], passa a fazer parte do ataque da segunda s&iacute;laba. Se [<span style="">dm]</span> fosse um grupo admiss&iacute;vel (p. ex. [d&#638;]), o falante n&atilde;o separava as duas consoantes e sabia que ambas pertenciam ao ataque da s&iacute;laba. Mas na an&aacute;lise que estou a desenvolver as sequ&ecirc;ncias como [dm] s&atilde;o inaceit&aacute;veis e, portanto, o falante teria que recorrer &agrave; hip&oacute;tese do n&uacute;cleo vazio. Num mundo globalizado em diversas &aacute;reas vivenciais, existem for&ccedil;osamente l&iacute;nguas que s&atilde;o pontes entre comunidades, l&iacute;nguas que s&atilde;o portadoras de for&ccedil;a econ&oacute;mica e empresarial.
