Participaram 233 estudantes da educação básica, com idade média de 15,10 anos (DP = 1,46), sendo 51,1% do sexo feminino e 53,2% de escolas públicas. Utilizou-se a Escala de Forças de Caráter, Escala de Engajamento Escolar e Questionário sociodemográfico. Os resultados indicaram que as 24 forças se correlacionaram positivamente com todos os fatores do engajamento escolar. Observou-se que houve maior prevalência do fator absorção, seguido de dedicação e vigor. As forças que tiveram maiores pontuações foram gratidão, curiosidade, bondade e modéstia. Os alunos do ensino público pontuaram mais no engajamento do que os do privado. Não se observou diferença significativa quanto ao sexo. Conclui-se que as forças colaboram para estimular ações e sentimentos positivos frente à aprendizagem.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: El artículo tiene por objetivo verificar la relación entre el compromiso escolar y las fuerzas de carácter, específicamente conocer la prevalencia de las variables estudiadas, identificar la influencia de la escuela y del sexo en el compromiso escolar. Participaron 233 estudiantes de educación básica, con edad media de 15,10 años (DP = 1,46), siendo 51,1% del sexo femenino y 53,2% de escuelas públicas. Se utilizó la Escala de Fuerzas de Carácter, Escala de Compromiso Escolar y Cuestionario sociodemográfico. Los resultados indicaron que las 24 fuerzas se correlacionaron positivamente con todos los factores del compromiso escolar. Se observó que hubo mayor prevalencia del fator absorción, seguido de dedicación y vigor. Las fuerzas que tuvieron mayores puntuaciones fueron gratitud, curiosidad, bondad y modestia. Los alumnos de la enseñanza pública puntuaron más en el compromiso que los de la enseñanza privada. No se observó diferencia significativa en cuanto al sexo. Se concluye que las fuerzas colaboran para estimular acciones y sentimientos positivos frente al aprendizaje.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The article aims to verify the relationship between school engagement and character strengths, specifically to know the prevalence of the variables studied, identify the influence of school and sex on school engagement. 233 students from basic education participated, with an average age of 15.10 (SD = 1.46), 51.1% female and 53.2% from public schools. It was used the Character strengths Scale, School Engagement Scale, and Sociodemographic questionnaire. The results indicated that the 24 strengths correlated positively with all factors of school engagement. It was observed that there was a higher prevalence of the absorption factor, followed by dedication and vigor. The strengths with higher scores were gratitude, curiosity, kindness and modesty. Public school students scored more in engagement than those of the private school. There was no significant difference as to sex. It is concluded that the strengths collaborate to stimulate actions and positive feelings about learning.]]></p></abstract>
