La especie Babesia vogeli, cuyo vector biológico es Rhipicephalus sanguineus, la garrapata marrón del perro, puede causar síntomas leves que van desde anemia y debilidad en cachorros hasta infecciones asintomáticas en adultos. En Uruguay, solo existe un informe molecular confirmando su presencia. El objetivo de este estudio es describir un caso clínico de babesiosis canina y su confirmación molecular en un perro en Uruguay. En octubre de 2023, se encontró una perra de raza mixta, de aproximadamente 4 meses de edad, vagando en una zona periférica de la ciudad de Montevideo. La perra estaba en muy mal estado, ligeramente deprimida y fuertemente parasitada con garrapatas. Tras el examen clínico del perro, se tomaron muestras de garrapatas y de sangre para bioquímica sanguínea y diagnóstico molecular. Se extrajo ADN de la muestra de sangre y de las garrapatas. El ADN de Babesia spp. se confirmó por PCR solo en la muestra de sangre; las muestras restantes de garrapatas resultaron negativas. Los amplicones resultantes se enviaron para secuenciación y se confirmó B. vogeli.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Babesia (Piroplasmida: Babesiidae) is a genus of protozoa that parasitizes the erythrocytes of various vertebrates, including dogs. The species Babesia vogeli, whose biological vector is Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick, can cause mild symptoms ranging from anemia and weakness in puppies to asymptomatic infections in adults. In Uruguay, there is only one molecular report confirming its presence. The aim of this study is to describe a clinical case of canine babesiosis and its molecular confirmation in a dog in Uruguay. In October 2023, a mixed-breed female dog, approximately 4 months old, was found wandering in a peripheral area of Montevideo city. The dog was in very poor condition, slightly depressed, and heavily infested with ticks. After a clinical examination of the dog, tick and blood samples were collected for blood biochemistry and molecular diagnosis. DNA was extracted from both the blood sample and the ticks. The presence of Babesia spp. DNA was confirmed by PCR only in the blood sample; the remaining tick samples tested negative. The resulting amplicons were sent for sequencing, confirming B. vogeli.]]></p></abstract>

A espécie Babesia vogeli, cujo vetor biológico é Rhipicephalus sanguineus, o carrapato marrom do cão, pode causar sintomas leves que variam de anemia e fraqueza em filhotes até infecções assintomáticas em adultos. No Uruguai, há apenas um relatório molecular confirmando sua presença. O objetivo deste estudo é descrever um caso clínico de babesiose canina e sua confirmação molecular em um cão no Uruguai. Em outubro de 2023, uma cadela mestiça, com aproximadamente 4 meses de idade, foi encontrada vagando em uma área periférica da cidade de Montevidéu. A cadela estava em péssimo estado, ligeiramente deprimida e fortemente infestada por carrapatos. Após o exame clínico do animal, foram coletadas amostras de carrapatos e de sangue para bioquímica sanguínea e diagnóstico molecular. O DNA foi extraído tanto da amostra de sangue quanto dos carrapatos. A presença de DNA de Babesia spp. foi confirmada por PCR apenas na amostra de sangue; as amostras restantes de carrapatos testaram negativo.
