Durante la gestación la disponibilidad de glucosa en la sangre materna debe aumentar para ser dirigida a la unidad-feto placentaria, promoviendo el adecuado desarrollo fetal, el que es máximo durante el último tercio de la gestación. El aumento de la glucemia preparto en las ovejas se explica por una resistencia transitoria a la insulina. Luego del parto, los neonatos deben preservar su homeostasis, mantener su glucemia y su temperatura corporal en forma independiente en rangos compatibles con la vida. Los neonatos dependen principalmente de las reservas de glucógeno y de la gluconeogénesis para mantener la glucemia, y de las reservas de grasa parda para generar calor. El estatus metabólico de las ovejas durante la gestación influye directamente sobre la cantidad de glucógeno y de grasa parda del cordero al nacimiento. La esquila preparto es un manejo que está siendo cada vez más utilizado por los productores, ya que los corderos nacen más pesados y tienen mayores tasas de supervivencia que los nacidos de ovejas no esquiladas. La esquila preparto adelanta la resistencia a la insulina previa al parto, por lo que la unidad feto-placentaria comienza a captar más glucosa más tempranamente. Consecuentemente, los depósitos de glucógeno muscular y hepático y las reservas de grasa parda son mayores en los neonatos hijos de ovejas esquiladas, y son utilizados como combustibles para la generación de energía y de calor metabólico. En resumen, la esquilada preparto favorece características metabólicas y morfológicas del cordero que aumentan la tasa metabólica y por tanto la generación de calor, lo que reduce las muertes por hipotermia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: This review synthesizes and discusses information on changes in the energy metabolism of pregnant ewes and their newborn lambs, as well as the modifications induced by prepartum shearing on the metabolism and thermoregulation of pregnant ewes and their lambs. During pregnancy, the availability of glucose in the maternal blood increases and is directed to the placental fetus unit, promoting adequate fetal development, which is maximum during the last third of gestation. A temporary insulin resistance explains the increase in prepartum blood glucose in sheep. After lambing, lambs must preserve their homeostasis by maintaining their blood glucose and body temperature within ranges compatible with life. Neonates rely primarily on glycogen stores and gluconeogenesis to maintain blood glucose and brown fat stores to generate heat. The metabolic status of the ewes during pregnancy directly influences the amount of glycogen and brown fat in the lamb at birth. Prepartum shearing is a management that farmers are increasingly using since lambs are born heavier and have higher survival rates than those born to non-shorn sheep. Prepartum shearing advances insulin resistance before parturition, so the fetoplacental unit begins to capture more glucose earlier. Consequently, muscle and liver glycogen stores and brown fat reserves are greater in newborns born to shorn ewes, which are used as fuels for energy generation and metabolic heat. In summary, prepartum shearing favors the metabolic and morphological characteristics of the lamb that increase the metabolic rate and increase heat production, resulting in fewer deaths due to hypothermia.]]></p></abstract>

Durante a gestação, a disponibilidade de glicose no sangue materno deve aumentar para ser direcionada à unidade feto-placentária, promovendo o desenvolvimento fetal adequado, que é máximo durante o último terço da gestação. O aumento da glicemia pré-parto nas ovelhas é explicado por uma resistência transitória à insulina. Depois do parto, os neonatos devem preservar sua homeostase, mantendo sua glicemia e sua temperatura corporal de forma independente e em faixas compatíveis com a vida. Os neonatos dependem principalmente das reservas de glicogênio e da gliconeogênese para manter a glicemia, e das reservas de gordura parda para gerar calor. O estado metabólico das ovelhas durante a gestação influencia diretamente a quantidade de glicogênio e de tecido adiposo marrom de cordeiros recém-nascidos. A tosquia pré-parto é um manejo que está sendo cada vez mais utilizado pelos produtores, já que os cordeiros nascem mais pesados e têm maiores taxas de sobrevivência que os nascidos de ovelhas não tosquiadas. A tosquia pré-parto adianta a resistência transitória à insulina anterior ao parto, e a unidade feto-placentária começa a captar mais glicose durante mais tempo. Consequentemente, os depósitos de glicogênio muscular e hepático e as reservas de tecido adiposo marrom são maiores nos filhos ovelhas esquilados, sendo usados como combustíveis para a geração de energia e calor metabólico.
