Este síndrome que agrupa obesidad, resistencia/desregulación a la insulina y laminitis/infosura causa pérdidas sustanciales en la industria equina. Se describe una clásica predisposición en aquellos animales descritos por sus propietarios como &#8220;rústicos&#8221;, refiriéndose a que mantienen su condición corporal frente a una dieta pobre, como lo es la raza criolla. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar por primera vez en nuestro país, un caso clínico de un equino hembra de la raza criolla con diagnóstico clínico de laminitis asociado a la obesidad y sobre alimentación. Se determinó la concentración de glucosa, insulina y otros parámetros bioquímicos y hematológicos y se compararon con hembras de la misma raza, sometidas al mismo ambiente y con similar condición corporal. La concentración de insulina y los ratios de insulina/glucosa confirmaron el diagnóstico del SME y estas variables revirtieron un mes luego del inicio del tratamiento.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The equine metabolic syndrome is one of the most prevalent endocrine pathologies in the equine species. This syndrome that involves obesity, insulin resistance/dysregulation and laminitis, causes substantial losses to the equine industry. Insulin resistance is described as the lack of response from the tissues to insulin, developing a consequent endogenous hyperinsulinemia. There is a classic predisposition in animals described as &#8220;easy keepers&#8221;, such as the criollo breed. The objective of this paper is to report for the first time in our country a clinical case of an equine criollo female with clinical diagnosis of laminitis associated with obesity and overfeeding. Insulin, glucose and other biochemical and hematological parameters were determined and compared with females of the same breed, environment and similar body condition score. Insulin concentration and insulin/glucose ratios confirmed the diagnosis of equine metabolic syndrome and these variables reverted one month after the initiation of the treatment.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: A síndrome metabólica equina (SME) é uma das doenças endócrinas mais prevalentes na espécie equina. Essa síndrome que reúne obesidade, resistência/desregulação insulínica e laminite causa perdas substanciais na indústria equina. Uma predisposição clássica é descrita naqueles animais considerados como &#8220;rústicos&#8221; por seus donos, referindo-se ao fato de manterem sua condição corporal diante de uma dieta pobre, como é o caso da raça crioula. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar, pela primeira vez em nosso país, um caso clínico de uma fêmea equina da raça crioula com diagnóstico clínico de laminite associada à obesidade e superalimentação. A concentração de glicose, insulina e outros parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos foram determinados e comparados com fêmeas da mesma raça, submetidas ao mesmo ambiente e com condição corporal semelhante. A concentração de insulina e a relação insulina/glicose confirmaram o diagnóstico de SME, e essas variáveis &#8203;&#8203;reverteram um mês após o início do tratamento.]]></p></abstract>
