Se utilizaron muestras de cerebelo (vermis, hemisferios laterales y lóbulo floculonodular) de una perra american staffordshire terrier que desarrolló signos de abiotrofia cerebelosa a los 6 años de edad y fue sacrificada 6 meses después debido al pobre pronóstico, y muestras de similares regiones anatómicas del cerebelo de un potrillo macho raza árabe, que mostró signos cerebelosos a los 40 días de edad y fue sacrificado 1 semana después. Las muestras se procesaron histológicamente y se colorearon con hematoxilina y eosina, para determinar el tipo de lesiones microscópicas y su severidad en una escala de 3 grados (leve, moderado o severo). Los principales cambios histológicos en ambos animales consistieron en la disminución de células en la capa granulosa, pérdida de neuronas de Purkinje y adelgazamiento de la capa molecular junto con astrogliosis. No se encontraron diferencias cualitativas en estas lesiones entre ambos casos, aunque sí ligeras diferencias en los grados de severidad para la astrogliosis en la capa molecular y la disminución de células en la capa granulosa. Especulamos que podrían atribuirse a las diferencias en los cursos clínicos entre ambos casos, más que a atributos interespecíficos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: A comparative histological study was performed in two cases of cerebellar abiotrophy in a dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and a foal (Equus ferus caballus) to assess whether the pathological changes differed in type and/or severity between these species. Samples of cerebellum (vermis, lateral hemispheres and flocculonodular lobe) from a female American Staffordshire terrier dog that developed signs of cerebellar abiotrophy at 6 years of age and was euthanized 6 months later due to poor prognosis, and a male Arabian foal that showed signs of cerebellar disease at 40 days of age and was euthanized 1 week later, were used. Samples were processed histologically, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined microscopically to assess the types of lesions and their degree of severity using a 3-scale scoring system (mild, moderate, or severe). The main histological changes in both cases were a reduction in the number of cells in the granular layer, loss of Purkinje neurons, and thinning of molecular layer with astrogliosis. There were no qualitative differences of these lesions between species, although minor differences in the severity scores were observed for astrogliosis on the molecular layer, and reduction in the number of cells in the granular layer. We speculate that these differences could be attributed to differences in the clinical courses between cases, rather than to interspecific attributes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: Um estudo histológico comparativo de dois casos de abiotrofia cerebelar em um canino (Canis lupus familiaris) e um eqüino (Equus ferus caballus) foi realizado para avaliar se as alterações histopatológicas diferiram em tipo e grau de gravidade entre essas espécies. Amostras cerebelares (vermis, hemisférios laterais e lobo floculonodular) de uma cadela American Staffordshire Terrier, que desenvolveu sinais de abiotrofia cerebelar aos 6 anos de idade e foi eutanasiada 6 meses depois devido ao mau prognóstico, e foram utilizadas amostras de regiões anatómicas cerebelares semelhantes de um potro árabe macho, que apresentou sinais cerebelares aos 40 dias de idade e foi sacrificado 1 semana depois. As amostras foram processadas histologicamente e coradas com hematoxilina e eosina para determinar o tipo de lesões microscópicas e sua gravidade em uma escala de 3 graus (leve, moderada ou grave). As principais alterações histológicas em ambos animais consistiram em diminuição de células na camada granulosa, perda de neurônios de Purkinje e afinamento da camada molecular juntamente com astrogliose. Não foram encontradas diferenças qualitativas nessas lesões entre os dois casos, embora houvesse pequenas diferenças nos graus de gravidade da astrogliose na camada molecular e na diminuição das células na camada granular. Especulamos que essas diferenças podem ser atribuídas às diferenças nos cursos clínicos entre os dois casos, e não a atributos interespecíficos.]]></p></abstract>
