Metodología:  se registró la ingesta alimentaria de una muestra de 555 niños. Se emplearon los softwares Evindi y PC-SIDE para obtener el aporte energético y de nutrientes.  Resultados:  el 16% de los menores de 5 años y el 30% de los menores de 2 años no consumen la cantidad de hierro necesaria. El consumo fue menor en los pertenecientes a hogares con menores ingresos y en aquellos con riesgo de desnutrición o desnutrición. El 5% de los niños menores de 5 años no cubre su requerimiento de ácido fólico, cifra que asciende a 13,2% en menores de 2 años, a 11% en hogares de menores ingresos y 15% en niños con riesgo de desnutrición o desnutrición. Se estimó que la fortificación de la harina de trigo con hierro y ácido fólico (ley 18.071), cubre el 39% del requerimiento de hierro y la totalidad del requerimiento de ácido fólico en los niños de 6 a 59 meses.  Conclusiones:  la deficiencia de hierro y ácido fólico afecta principalmente a los niños menores de 2 años, a aquellos con un estado nutricional deficiente y a los pertenecientes a los estratos socioeconómicos más bajos. Si bien los alimentos incluidos en la ley 18.071 contribuyen a satisfacer las necesidades de hierro y ácido fólico, su aporte no es suficiente, por lo que resulta importante fortalecer otras medidas de salud pública.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary:  Objectives: estimate the intake of iron and folic acid and their adequacy to nutritional requirements in children aged 6 to 59 months in Uruguay.  Methodology:  we recorded the food intake of a sample of 555 children. We used the PC-Side and Evindi software to obtain the energy and nutrient intake.  Results:  16% of children under 5 years old and 30% of children under 2 years old do not consume the necessary amount of iron. Consumption was lower in households with lower income levels and in those at risk of malnutrition or malnutrition. 5% of children under 5 years old do not meet their folic acid requirements, rising to 13.2% in children under 2 years of age, 11% in households with lower income levels, and 15% in children at risk of malnutrition or suffering from malnutrition.  It was estimated that the fortification of wheat flour with iron and folic acid (Law 18.071) covers 39% of the iron requirement and the entire folic acid requirement in children aged 6 to 59 months.  Conclusions:  iron and folic acid deficiency primarily affects children under 2 years of age, those with poor nutritional status, and those from lower socioeconomic strata. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo:  Objetivos:  estimar o consumo de ferro e ácido fólico e sua adequação às necessidades nutricionais em crianças de 6 a 59 meses no Uruguai.  Metodologia:  a ingestão alimentar de uma amostra de 555 crianças foi registrada. Os softwares Evindi e PC-SIDE foram utilizados para obter a contribuição energética e de nutrientes.  Resultados:  16% por cento das crianças menores de 5 anos e 30% das crianças menores de 2 anos não consomem a quantidade necessária de ferro. O consumo foi menor naqueles pertencentes a domicílios de menor renda e naqueles com risco de desnutrição ou desnutrição. Cinco por cento das crianças menores de 5 anos não atendem à sua necessidade de ácido fólico, cifra que atinge 13,2% em menores de 2 anos, 11% em domicílios de menor renda e 15% em crianças com risco de desnutrição ou desnutrição. Estimou-se que a fortificação da farinha de trigo com ferro e ácido fólico (Lei 18.071) cobre 39% da necessidade de ferro e a totalidade da necessidade de ácido fólico em crianças de 6 a 59 meses.  Conclusões:  a deficiência de ferro e ácido fólico afeta principalmente crianças menores de 2 anos, aquelas com estado nutricional deficiente e as pertencentes a estratos socioeconômicos mais baixos. Embora os alimentos incluídos na Lei 18.071 contribuam para satisfazer as necessidades de ferro e ácido fólico, sua contribuição não é suficiente, sendo importante fortalecer outras medidas de saúde pública.]]></p></abstract>
