Si bien dicho estado puede considerarse como una forma de adaptación sin valor patológico específico, las modificaciones extremas pueden ser potencialmente arritmogénicas. La importancia de una comprensión cabal y profunda de estas modificaciones radica en poder distinguirlo de la presencia de una cardiopatía en un atleta, lo cual tiene grandes implicancias pronósticas y terapéuticas. En el siguiente manuscrito se revisan las bases fisiopatológicas de estas adaptaciones, los cambios clínicos y paraclínicos encontrados y las estrategias de prevención primaria y secundaria de muerte súbita en deportistas, con especial hincapié en los desafíos que enfrenta el cardiólogo, asociados a la prescripción de ejercicio en algunas cardiopatías subyacentes específicas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: The term athlete&#8217;s heart defines the autonomic nervous system cardiac adaptations, as well as physiological, endocrine, and structural adaptations generated by regular physical training. While this state can be considered a form of adaptation without specific pathological significance, extreme modifications can be potentially arrhythmogenic. The importance of a thorough understanding of these modifications lies in being able to distinguish them from the presence of heart disease in an athlete, which has significant prognostic and therapeutic implications. This manuscript reviews the pathophysiological basis of these adaptations, the clinical and paraclinical changes observed, and the primary and secondary prevention strategies for sudden death in athletes, with particular emphasis on the challenges cardiologists face when prescribing exercise for certain underlying heart conditions.]]></p></abstract>

Embora esse estado possa ser considerado uma forma de adaptação sem significado patológico específico, modificações extremas podem ser potencialmente arritmogênicas. A importância de uma compreensão completa dessas modificações reside na capacidade de distingui-las da presença de doença cardíaca em um atleta, o que tem implicações prognósticas e terapêuticas significativas. Este artigo revisa a base fisiopatológica dessas adaptações, as alterações clínicas e paraclínicas observadas e as estratégias de prevenção primária e secundária para morte súbita em atletas, com ênfase particular nos desafios enfrentados pelos cardiologistas ao prescrever exercícios para determinadas condições cardíacas subjacentes.]]></p></abstract>
