Aproximadamente un tercio de los eventos se explican por embolias de origen cardíaco y aórtico. El objetivo fundamental del equipo médico es identificar las potenciales fuentes de embolias, dado que el tratamiento difiere según la condición de base diagnosticada. En este contexto, las técnicas de imagen cardiovascular cumplen una función central y, dentro de ellas, el rol de la ecocardiografía es fundamental. Destaca el foramen oval permeable, una anomalía congénita con una prevalencia elevada cercana al 25% en la población general, asociada en forma creciente con accidentes cerebrovasculares; planteándose como mecanismo principal la embolia paradojal. Presentamos el caso clínico de una paciente femenina de 76 años, quien presentó de forma concomitante un infarto cerebral y una embolia pulmonar en el contexto de un foramen oval permeable identificado mediante ecocardiografía transesofágica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary Ischemic stroke is a common pathological entity with a high morbidity and mortality burden worldwide. Approximately one-third of events are explained by embolisms of cardiac and aortic origin. The fundamental objective of the medical team is to identify potential sources of embolisms, given that treatment differs according to the diagnosed underlying condition. In this context, cardiovascular imaging techniques play a central role, and within them, echocardiography plays a fundamental role. Patent foramen ovale is particularly important, a congenital anomaly with a high prevalence of nearly 25% in the general population, increasingly associated with cerebrovascular accidents, with paradoxical embolism being considered the main mechanism. We present the clinical case of a 76-year-old female patient who concomitantly presented a cerebral infarction and a pulmonary embolism in the context of a patent foramen ovale identified by transesophageal echocardiography.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo O acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico é uma entidade patológica comum com alta carga de morbidade e mortalidade em todo o mundo. Aproximadamente um terço dos eventos são explicados por embolias de origem cardíaca e aórtica. O objetivo fundamental da equipe médica é identificar potenciais fontes de embolias, visto que o tratamento difere dependendo da condição subjacente diagnosticada. Neste contexto, as técnicas de imagem cardiovascular desempenham um papel central, e dentro delas o papel da ecocardiografia é fundamental. Destaca-se o forame oval patente, anomalia congênita com alta prevalência próxima a 25% na população geral, cada vez mais associada a acidentes cerebrovasculares, sendo proposta a embolia paradoxal como principal mecanismo. Apresentamos o caso clínico de uma paciente do sexo feminino, 76 anos, que apresentou concomitantemente infarto cerebral e embolia pulmonar no contexto de forame oval patente identificado por ecocardiografia transesofágica.]]></p></abstract>
