La tiroidectomía total (TT), es uno de los pilares más importantes para su tratamiento, sin embargo, no está exento de complicaciones. De estas últimas, las más recurrentes son el hipoparatiroidismo transitorio/permanente, la lesión del nervio laríngeo recurrente (NLR) y la hemorragia posquirúrgica.  Objetivo: conocer la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en esta población y algunos factores de riesgo para este tipo de tumores. Determinar la incidencia de complicaciones postquirúrgicas después de la TT, como tratamiento inicial para el CDT.  Materiales y métodos: estudio observacional, descriptivo, y retrospectivo realizado en la Unidad Académica de Endocrinología y Metabolismo entre 2011-2021. Las variables cuantitativas fueron representadas por media y mediana; las cualitativas fueron descritas con frecuencia absoluta y relativa porcentual.  Resultados: el 34 % fue tabaquista, el 39 % tuvo sobrepeso, el 30 % obesidad, el 7 % el antecedente familiar de cáncer de tiroides y el 2 % tiene antecedentes de radiación de cabeza y cuello. A su vez, el 59 % de la muestra presentó complicaciones postquirúrgicas (71 eventos en 60 pacientes). La complicación más frecuente fue el hipoparatiroidismo transitorio presente en el 48 %, seguido del hipoparatiroidismo permanente con un 8,9 %; el 8 % presentó lesión del nervio laríngeo recurrente y el 3 % presentó sangrado; por último, solo un paciente tuvo hematoma cervical.  Conclusiones: la prevalencia de sobrepeso/obesidad fue alta en más de la mitad de los casos y, por otro lado, el tabaquismo estuvo presente en la tercera parte de los pacientes. En la mayoría de los sujetos hubo presencia de complicaciones postquirúrgicas. El hipoparatiroidismo transitorio fue el más común en casi la mitad de ellos, seguido del hipoparatiroidismo permanente y, en menor porcentaje, la lesión del NLR, la hemorragia del sitio quirúrgico y el hematoma cervical.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common endocrine neoplasm, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Total thyroidectomy (TT) is one of the main pillars of treatment; however, it is not without complications. The most frequent complications include transient/permanent hypoparathyroidism, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, and postoperative hemorrhage.  Objective: to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in this population, as well as some risk factors for this type of tumor. Additionally, to assess the incidence of postoperative complications following TT as an initial treatment for DTC.  Materials and methods: an observational, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted in the Endocrinology and Metabolism Academic Unit between 2011 and 2021. Quantitative variables were represented using mean and median, while qualitative variables were described with absolute frequency and percentage distribution.  Results: among the patients, 34 % were smokers, 39 % were overweight, 30 % were obese, 7 % had a family history of thyroid cancer, and 2 % had a history of head and neck radiation. Postoperative complications were observed in 59 % of the sample (71 events in 60 patients). The most common complication was transient hypoparathyroidism, present in 48 % of cases, followed by permanent hypoparathyroidism in 8,9 %. RLN injury occurred in 8 % of patients, 3 % experienced bleeding, and one patient developed a cervical hematoma.  Conclusions: the prevalence of overweight/obesity was high, affecting more than half of the sample, and smoking was present in one-third of the patients. Postoperative complications were common, with transient hypoparathyroidism being the most frequent, followed by permanent hypoparathyroidism. A tireoidectomia total (TT) é um dos principais pilares do tratamento; no entanto, não está isenta de complicações. As mais frequentes incluem hipoparatireoidismo transitório/permanente, lesão do nervo laríngeo recorrente (NLR) e hemorragia pós-operatória.  Objetivo: Determinar a prevalência de sobrepeso e obesidade nessa população, bem como alguns fatores de risco para esse tipo de tumor. Além disso, avaliar a incidência de complicações pós-operatórias após a TT como tratamento inicial para o CDT.  Materiais e métodos: estudo observacional, descritivo e retrospectivo realizado na Unidade Acadêmica de Endocrinologia e Metabolismo entre 2011 e 2021. As variáveis quantitativas foram representadas por média e mediana, enquanto as variáveis qualitativas foram descritas com frequência absoluta e percentual.
