However, the development of rots, caused mainly by Penicillium expansum, cannot be avoided. To prevent fruit losses, biological control has been proposed as a potential alternative. In this work, 16 psychrotrophic, non-pectinolytic Debaryomyces hansenii strains were evaluated in a bioassay for their potential biocontrol against P. expansum rots in apples and pears. Isolates with different degrees of biocontrol effectiveness were further investigated in vitro to elucidate mechanisms of antagonism that may have contributed to biocontrol. No correlation between any of the studied mechanisms and biocontrol activity could be established. One of the isolates, designated F9D, was selected due to its ability to reduce rot incidence in more than 95% in apples and 85% in pears. This strain could be a good candidate for the development of a yeast-based formulation to protect both types of fruit. An ISSR-PCR method was developed for typing the selected strain. This molecular marker could be a useful tool to follow the fate of the strain applied on fruit.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: Las manzanas y las peras son normalmente almacenadas en cámaras refrigeradas para preservar su calidad y así mantener una oferta constante durante todo el año. Sin embargo, la pérdida de fruta causada por agentes fúngicos no puede ser completamente evitada. Una alternativa para reducir estas enfermedades es el control biológico. En este trabajo, 16 levaduras sicrotróficas antárticas pertenecientes a la especie Debaryomyces hansenii fueron evaluadas en ensayos de biocontrol contra P. expansum en manzanas y peras. Los aislamientos presentaron diferentes grados de biocontrol y fueron posteriormente evaluados in vitro con el fin de elucidar los mecanismos de acción que podrían estar contribuyendo al biocontrol. No se encontraron correlaciones entre los mecanismos estudiados y la capacidad de biocontrol de las diferentes cepas. Una de las cepas, codificada como F9D, fue seleccionada debido a su habilidad para reducir la incidencia de la enfermedad en más de 95% en manzanas y 85% en peras. Esta cepa podría ser una buena candidata para el desarrollo de una formulación que protegiera ambos tipos de frutas. Un método de ISSR-PCR fue desarrollado para tipificar a la cepa seleccionada, lo que podría ser una herramienta útil para realizar un seguimiento de la cepa una vez aplicada a la fruta.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: As maçãs e peras são normalmente armazenadas em câmaras frigoríficas para preservar a qualidade e assim manter um abastecimento constante ao longo do ano. No entanto, o desenvolvimento de podridões, causadas principalmente por Penicillium expansum não pode ser evitado. O controle biológico tem sido considerado como una alternativa potencial para reduzir a perda de frutas. Neste trabalho, 16 leveduras psicrotróficas antárticas pertencentes a espécie D. hansenii foram avaliadas como agentes de biocontrole contra P. expansum em macas e peras. Os isolados com diferentes graus de biocontrole foram posteriormente avaliados in vitro a fim de elucidar os mecanismos de ação que poderiam estar contribuindo ao biocontrole. Não foram encontradas correlações entre os mecanismos estudados e a capacidade de biocontrole das diferentes cepas. Uma das cepas codificadas como F9D foi selecionada devido a sua capacidade de reduzir a incidência da doença em mais de 95 % em maçãs e 85 % em peras. Esta cepa poderia ser uma boa candidata para o desenvolvimento de uma formulação que proteja os dois tipos de fruta. Um método de ISSR-PCR foi desenvolvido para tipificar a cepa selecionada. O marcador molecular pode ser uma ferramenta útil para fazer um seguimento da cepa uma vez aplicada a fruta.]]></p></abstract>
