La hipoglucemia secundaria al tratamiento insulínico, se cataloga según su severidad. La presentación clínica es variada y su reiteración conduce a bajos umbrales sintomáticos, pudiendo ocasionar hipoglucemia desapercibida; esta última se asocia a su vez con hipoglucemia severa. El objetivo del trabajo fue conocer la prevalencia de hipoglucemia desapercibida y/o severa en pacientes con DM tipo 1 y DM tipo 2 tratados con insulina, así como su asociación con las variables: edad, sexo, tipo de DM, duración de la misma y tipo de insulina utilizada.  Metodología:  Se realizó un estudio descriptivo observacional, de 4 meses. Se evaluó hipoglucemia desapercibida con el cuestionario validado de Clarke y se utilizó la definición de hipoglucemia severa según el mismo instrumento.  Resultados:  Se captaron 116 pacientes, 52% sexo masculino, edad promedio 42 años. 60% con DM1, con 13 años promedio de evolución de la DM. La insulina basal más utilizada fue NPH (58.6%). La hipoglucemia desapercibida se registró en 32.8 % (66% para DM 1 y 34 % para DM2) y se asoció significativamente con tiempo de evolución de la DM. En la subpoblación con DM1 (p &lt; 0.001). La hipoglucemia severa se registró en 41.4 % (65 % para DM1 y 35% para DM2). Se demostró la asociación significativa entre hipoglucemia desapercibida y severa (p &lt; 0.001).  Conclusiones:  Se plantea que las nuevas tecnologías en diabetes puedan ser una herramienta que permita descender estas cifras.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction:  Good glycemic control is essential to delay or reduce the complications of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Hypoglycemia secondary to insulin treatment is classified according to its severity. The clinical presentation is varied and its repetition leads to low symptomatic thresholds, which can cause unnoticed hypoglycemia; the latter is associated with severe hypoglycemia. The objective of the work was to determine the prevalence of unnoticed and/or severe hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 DM and type 2 DM treated with insulin, as well as its association with the variables: age, sex, type of DM, duration of the same and type of insulin used.  Methodology:  A descriptive observational study was carried out, lasting 4 months. Unnoticed hypoglycemia was evaluated with the validated Clarke questionnaire and the definition of severe hypoglycemia was used according to the same instrument.  Results:  116 patients were recruited, 52% male, average age 42 years. 60% with DM1, with an average of 13 years of DM evolution. The most commonly used basal insulin was NPH (58.6%). Unnoticed hypoglycemia was recorded in 32.8% (66% for DM 1 and 34% for DM2) and was significantly associated with DM evolution time. In the subpopulation with DM1 (p &lt; 0.001), severe hypoglycemia was recorded in 41.4% (65% for DM1 and 35% for DM2). A hipoglicemia secundária ao tratamento com insulina é classificada de acordo com sua gravidade. A apresentação clínica é variada e sua repetição leva a baixos limiares sintomáticos, podendo causar hipoglicemia despercebida; Este último, por sua vez, está associado à hipoglicemia grave. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência de hipoglicemia despercebida e/ou grave em pacientes com DM tipo 1 e DM tipo 2 tratados com insulina, bem como sua associação com as variáveis: idade, sexo, tipo de DM, duração do mesmo e tipo de insulina utilizada.  Metodologia:  Foi realizado um estudo observacional descritivo de 4 meses. A hipoglicemia não percebida foi avaliada com o questionário Clarke validado e a definição de hipoglicemia grave foi utilizada de acordo com o mesmo instrumento.  Resultados:  Foram recrutados 116 pacientes, 52% do sexo masculino, com idade média de 42 anos. 60% com DM1, com média de 13 anos de evolução do DM. A insulina basal mais utilizada foi a NPH (58,6%).
