La producción de granos con destino a la alimentación animal ha crecido en forma relevante. Se revisa en forma crítica la inserción del país en el sistema alimentario mundial y su aporte nutricional para la población nacional en base a tres indicadores: 1) número de personas alimentadas por la producción nacional de alimentos; 2) contribución a la seguridad alimentaria según país de destino de las exportaciones y 3) producción nacional de frutas y verduras por persona. La cantidad de personas potencialmente alimentadas por la producción nacional es de 19,4 millones. La cantidad de calorías producidas en alimentos para animales es del 32 % del total. Si todas las calorías en el alimento para animales fueran destinadas directamente para consumo humano, la cantidad de personas alimentadas sería de 27,8 millones, pero debido a la pérdida de eficiencia por conversión, se alimentan 8,4 millones de personas menos. Los alimentos que exporta Uruguay se destinan en un 94 % a países de baja (89 %) o moderada (5 %) inseguridad alimentaria, relativizando su aporte a situaciones graves de inseguridad alimentaria. La producción nacional de frutas y verduras, disponible para el consumo en el mercado interno en fresco, representa el 50 % del consumo mínimo recomendado para una alimentación saludable. Se identifica como debilidad de la producción que, a pesar de ser excedentaria en calorías, presenta desequilibrios en el tipo de alimentos producidos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: Uruguay is an agricultural-based country and stands out for exporting most of its food production, mainly meat and soybeans. The production of grains for animal feed has grown significantly. The insertion of the country in the world food system and its nutritional contribution for the national population is critically reviewed based on three indicators: 1) number of people fed by the national food production; 2) contribution to food security according to destination country of exports and 3) national production of fruits and vegetables per person. The number of people potentially fed by the national production is 19.4 million. The amount of calories produced in animal feed is 32 % of the total. If all the calories in animal feed were destined directly for human consumption, the number of people fed would be 27.8 million, but due to the loss of efficiency per conversion, 8.4 million fewer people are fed. The food exported by Uruguay is 94 % destined for countries with low (89 %) or moderate (5 %) food insecurity, relativizing their contribution to serious situations of food insecurity. The national production of fruits and vegetables, available for consumption in the fresh domestic market, represents 50 % of the minimum recommended consumption for a healthy diet. A weakness in production is identified, which despite a being surplus in calories, presents imbalances in the type of food produced.]]></p></abstract>
