YANEZ, Bernardo; MENENDEZ, Lumila Paula y FIGUEIRO, Gonzalo. Towards an un-disciplining of anthropological practice and theory. Interview with Cristóbal Gnecco (Universidad del Cauca, Popayán, Colombia). Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, e111. Epub 01-Dic-2024. ISSN 2393-7068. https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v9i2.2436.
We spoke with Cristóbal Gnecco about coloniality and geopolitical asymmetries in anthropological practice, as well as his transition from archaeology to ethnography which is, by all means, a transition from discipline to undiscipline. Throughout the interview, he offers critiques of modern thought and everything that stems from it: the reinforcement of disciplines, the labeling of certain archaeologies as “alternative”, contract archaeology, multiculturalism, and multivocal perspectives. Cristóbal presents his view on the need for “un-disciplining”, unlearning, and learning new, essential aspects for the urgent political transformation required. He suggests using “actor-network theory” as an analytical ethnographic approach to describe networks and understand how actors move within them. In conclusion, he argues that the activism of voices challenging disciplinary boundaries is growing stronger and emphasizes the importance of embracing multiplicities to drive the necessary changes he proposes.
