YANEZ, Bernardo; MENENDEZ, Lumila Paula y FIGUEIRO, Gonzalo. Reflections on the world system of anthropology in the 21st century; a Latin American perspective. Interview with Gustavo Lins Ribeiro (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Lerma, CDMX, Mexico). Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, e108. Epub 01-Dic-2024. We talked with Gustavo Lins Ribeiro about coloniality and geopolitical asymmetries in anthropological practice, as well as about the concepts of the world system of anthropology and the world anthropologies in the first quarter of the 21st century. Regarding coloniality, he highlights the similar but unequal structures in academic production between center and periphery, especially due to the small size and late and uneven development of the academic community in the periphery. He also stresses the notions of cognitive extractivism as an ethical problem and the materiality of hegemony, expressed in the disproportion of funding in the centers of knowledge production. The importance of theoretical production in Latin America is emphasized, as well as the “provincial cosmopolitanism” that characterizes academic production in the periphery. Finally, he reflects on the future of anthropologies in Latin America, proposing an optimistic view regarding the growth and relevance of the discipline, both locally and globally, in the research of changing issues such as racism or State terrorism.
