Abstract

FLORIANI, Lucas Prieto  and  VIERA, Celeste Martinez. Uruguay: “The famous little notch where there was no data at all”. A chapter in the production of bioanthropological knowledge in Uruguay. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, e107.  Epub Dec 01, 2024. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v9i2.2321.

This article investigates a chapter in the history of Uruguayan bioanthropology through the analysis of a series of osteological files prepared between 1986 and 1987, involving the bioanthropologist Mónica Sans and the Carlos Maeso Collection. It mainly addresses two themes: the historicization of the bioanthropological discipline in Uruguay; and the debate about the conditions of production of bioanthropological knowledge from the perspective of the geopolitics of knowledge. From the integration of different materialities with different theoretical-methodological perspectives, it is possible to construct a narrative that accounts for a disciplinary history that considers the meanings and perspectives of its actors, without leaving aside the materials. In this particular case, it is narrated how Sans' work reflects the development of the discipline in our country and its link with the national and regional situation. It is a contribution to understanding the development of the discipline in our country and some perspectives to take into account in the future: the incorporation of the ethnographic perspective in bioanthropology, the place of the subject in the production of knowledge, the construction of a local agenda, and the re-anthropologization of biological anthropology.
