Resumen

VAZQUEZ SANCHEZ, Vanessa  y  RANGEL RIVERO, Armando. Reflections on asymmetries: bioanthropological practice in Cuba and its challenges. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.2, e105.  Epub 01-Dic-2024. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v9i2.2259.

Over the time, asymmetries have arisen in bioanthropological practice in Cuba. The goals of this paper are to identify them and reflect on the challenges that they represent, by means of specific examples. Among the inequalities described are the insufficient number of human resources, which is a challenge for the training and replacement of future generations of specialists, greater possibility of doing field work than laboratory work, problems in finding research funding, dependence on international projects, inequalities within the country related with different modalities of exhibition of human remains, and difficulties with the visibility of the results in publications in high impact journals. As strategies to face the challenges we suggest the contribution of students to research projects, the formation of multidisciplinary teams, balanced foreign collaborations and the support of international projects and institutions. In spite of these asymmetries, there is a tradition and leadership in biological anthropology research in the country.

Palabras clave : bioanthropology; Cuba; asymmetries.
