Abstract

FIGUEIRO, Pablo J.  and  SANCHEZ, María Soledad. Digital financial platforms, own money and autonomy. An analysis of the uses and meanings of digital money in a context of confinement. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2023, vol.8, n.2, e206.  Epub Dec 01, 2023. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v8i2.1951.

Based on fieldwork in a prison in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this article explores how the authorization of cell phone possession in the context of the COVID pandemic enabled the use of digital financial platforms among prisoners, modifying the circulation and uses of money and redefining the ways in which they they pay, borrow or invest money. The paper analyzes the transformations produced by the incorporation of these new technologies over social relations in the prison world and on the way in which prisoners see themselves. It is argued that the use of digital financial apps made a specific experience of autonomy possible among detainees, by allowing access, management, or even the production of their own money, thus altering the relations of dependence with others.

Keywords : prisión; digital financial platforms; money; autonomy.
