Abstract

LOTTI VIGNA, Eliana. MAHÂYÂNA BUDDHISM IN DIALOGUE WITH DECONSTRUCTION. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2018, vol.3, n.2, pp.117-135. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v3.n2.9.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the possible resonances between the thought of the différance of Derrida (1930-2004) and aspects of Mahāyāna Buddhism, therefore the thought of Nāgārjuna (II and III century AD) its main exponent. The theoretical - methodological problems and the anachronism are evident in this challenge to put into dialogue so different cultures in time and space. However, we argue that Derrida's thinking, as well as certain aspects of the so-called "post-structuralist" and "post-modern" western currents, presents challenging aspects when undertaking this dialogue. Identity, difference, presence, essence are concepts that, examined in the light of Buddhist matrix thinking, can be reformulated. The shift from the attention of metaphysics to the philosophy of language from what was called the "linguistic turn" is offered as a turning point in western culture in its interpretation of Buddhism, opening space for a new understanding of the same. Western philosophy from this "turn" will pay special attention to questions of language, speculations that in Indian thought have secular roots. Whetherthe thought of Nāgārjuna like that of Derrida act in their respective contexts, mutatis mutandis, a true ontological - metaphysical rupture. Both thinkers investigate the relational conditions of the real, the classifying and reifying hierarchies produced through language. As a close of this journey we will reflect on the possibility of a new ethical opening in which buddhism and deconstruction become
