Abstract

PEREIRA, David da Silva. POPULISM AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE VENEZUELAN CASE. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2018, vol.3, n.2, pp.87-94. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v3.n6.

This text discusses populism in Venezuela and, as a case study, in Latin America, relying on a source - the Miraflores Letter (Carta de Miraflores,1999). This analysis aims to discuss some elements of Venezuela’s contemporary historical itinerary towards the defense of a historiography that considers the context in order to identify the features of the populist movement in each reality. The historiographical source makes it possible, from the resumption of the context and the in-depth understanding of the logics involved, unveiling the reasons and understandings that enabled this or that popular option or even this or that political movement. In this way, the goal is to offer elements to understand the Venezuelan case from a fundamental source for the rewriting of history: a local, contextualized history, which pretends to be immunized regarding external vectors, but above all, regarding external logics and interests. As results, we can say that the understanding of the context is only able to illuminate the phenomenon identified as populism, as well as the non-exclusivity of peripheral or developing countries regarding this popular-political movement.

Keywords : Venezuela; Historiography; Populism; Chavismo; Self-determination.
