Abstract

PEREZ, Aleixandre Duche  and  BLAZ SIALER, David. METHOD, HISTORY AND THEORY IN LÉVI-STRAUSS. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2018, vol.3, n.2, pp.61-71. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v3.n2.4.

Claude Lévi-Strauss is one of the most authoritative figures in the history of the young anthropological discipline, due to his contribution in increasing the wealth of ethnographic knowledge and in the formulation of one of the most powerful theoretical proposals of the 20th century aimed at the understanding of human nature. In addition, its methodological and conceptual rigor have allowed consecutive generations of anthropologists to apprehend and interpret cultural diversity, an immanent characteristic of societies. In this article we will review the main theoretical postulates of structuralism, emphasizing two of its fundamental principles: the understanding of the human mind as unique and transcendental, and the methodological choice for synchronicity, highlighting the close relationship between both statements. Finally, we will refer to the need to understand the important role of theoretical production in the progress of anthropological science and to adapt their conceptual tools in order to know our contemporaneity.

Keywords : Claude Lévi-Strauss; structuralism; theory; ethnographic methodology; anthropology.
