Abstract

VOMERO, Fabricio. UPDATED REVIEW OF THE FIRST REPORT ABOUT MENTAL HOSPITAL AND MADNESS IN URUGUAY, 1884, BY ANDRÉS CROVETTO. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2018, vol.3, n.2, pp.43-59. ISSN 2393-7068.

Through the revision of a report about the state of the National Mental Hospital and its situation at the end of the 19th century, I propose to know how the society of that time was raised (and admitted) “solve” the matter of the so called insane, through the confinement of people declared "sick". Psychiatric hospitalization implied, and implies, a very particular type of isolation, involving deprivation of liberty which produces very precise effects in those who suffer it; this aspect of the psychiatric treatment is still a problem in our society today, in the 21st century. Ethical and cultural aspects have been pointed out, critically, by important authors that from sociology, philosophy, anthropology continue analyzing elements that in pioneer form they appeared in the report of A. Crovetto, of 1884
