GAMBOA, Martín. NOSTALGIC PILGRIMAGES TO MONSIER SHOSHANI'S TOMB IN URUGUAY. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2018, vol.3, n.1, pp.29-47. ISSN 2393-7068.  https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v3.n1.2.

This article analyses the historical and anthropological factors of a type of ‘nostalgic pilgrimage’, which consists in visiting the grave of a Talmudic teacher who lived his last years in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. The secret and enigmatic master of Talmud of Emmanuel Lévinas and Elie Wiesel (called Mr. Shoshani), became the most influential mentor of both as well as other famous disciples. So, since the 70s

Shoshani’s grave has been receiving visits. From a microhistorical approach, the article explains how after his dead in 1968 people from different countries come every year to Uruguay to visit his grave. Furthermore, over the last few years pilgrimages to his grave increased. This research concludes that one of the main factors of pilgrimages to his grave is due to deep legacy that left between his disciples as well as the aura of riddle and secret that always surrounded his life. Although Shoshani already had certain fame in Jewish circles being alive, it was after his death when his figure begins to take on importance in Jewish community and outside it. Therefore, his grave became a tourist attractive so many people go on pilgrimages in different periods of year. Finally, the article also explains how a microhistory can become a macrohistory.
