Empiric testimonies and theoretical reasons from an investigation and collective learning are exposed in the form of an Athenaeum, organized by the Anthropology and Health Program of the College of Humanities and Sciences of Education, Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay, during the second semester of 2014.

From the anthropologic perspective we understood it was interesting to experiment with an innovative format to analyze a complex case linked to the field of human health. It happened in Montevideo on the first semester of that year, with dramatic consequences and involving different cultural worlds: those of a hospital, its health team and actors demanding assistance.

Concerning this case, picked up from the media, we suggested the manifestation of a cultural diversity, mostly rooted to the production of meanings within social sectors and professional groups, under socio-economic determinants and linked to cultural capitals unequally distributed. Cultural capitals associated to knowledge and management of power, even in restricted areas from where each actor is related to one health assistance institution.

The starting point of the investigation was the ethnographic reconstruction and densification around the event: “At dawn on Tuesday, before the event took place (the father’s death) he was taken to the Maciel Hospital but a psychiatrist doctor never came to take care of him, so he returned home…” (Statements of J.G.’ wife to El País newspaper, March 7, 2014).
