GOMEZ SONORA, Valentina. The right to gender identification from an ethnographic point of view. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2016, vol.1, n.2, pp.73-88. ISSN 2393-7068.

This research preview analizes the experiences around the right to gender identity in Uruguay. The right to gender identity is created with the law N° 18.620; it gives the posibility of change the name and the sex that are registred in the identity document. The process of drafting the law involves regular meetings of civil society with parliamentaries to create a Law project, that during the discusion in the Chamber of Diputies is modified. Why do some people have to go through a judicial procedure for a judge let live their gender identity? People who go through this change are called trans, prefix that means “on the other side” and is antonym of cis , which means “on this side”; either side, are about the relationship linking sex/gender. Cis are those with the same gender identity that they were assigned at birth. The hegemony of gender is in cis people hands. In the “between” that connects people cis with trans is implicit the need to regulate the trans identities through legal proceedings

Keywords : transgender; human rights; etnography; gender; sex.
