Abstract

BACCELLI, Augusto; SUGO, Valentina  and  PERENDONES, Mercedes. Methimazole-induced febrile neutropenia. Rev. Urug. Med. Int. [online]. 2022, vol.7, n.1, pp.41-48.  Epub Mar 01, 2022. ISSN 2393-6797.  https://doi.org/10.26445/07.01.5.

Synthetic antithyroid drugs us methimazole have neutropenia as one of their adverse events. Although it is of low frequency (0.1 - 1%), it can lead to serious infections with a mortality rate of up to 4%. The pathogenic mechanism is not clear, a series of immunological alterations are proposed. The treatment consists of the

immediate suspension of the medication and the treatment of the infectious process. Two clinical cases are presented that manifest one with a skin and soft tissue infection, and the other with an acute community lung disease, confirming a severe febrile neutropenia that is linked to the use of methimazole.

Keywords : methimazole; febrile neutropenia.
