ROSTAN, Sofía; GARCIA, Daiana  and  BRUNO, Gustavo. Hypokalaemia associated with the consumption of cola drinks. Rev. Urug. Med. Int. [online]. 2022, vol.7, n.1, pp.36-40.  Epub Mar 01, 2022. ISSN 2393-6797.  https://doi.org/10.26445/07.01.4.

Hypokalemia is defined as serum potassium concentration less than 3.5 mEq/l. Hypokalaemia less than 3 mEq/l can present with cardiovascular and neurological symptoms. A case of myopathy secondary to hypokalaemia due to excessive consumption of sugary cola is presented. Although this etiology is rare, it is described in the literature, and given the high consumption of these beverages, it is important to keep it in mind in patients with these symptoms.

Keywords : hypokalemia; cola drinks; myopathy.
